In 1962 Baltimore, Maryland, plump teenager Tracy Turnblad's dream is to dance on The Corny Collins Show, a local television dance program, alongside teen heartthrob Link Larkin. When she gets put in detention with Seaweed Stubbs and other African-American students in the school, they teach her some of their dance moves, and her new-found groove wins her a spot on Corny’s show. Tracy becomes a celebrity overnight and uses her influence to advocate for racial integration on the TV show. She faces plenty of cruelty and interference from the show’s narrow-minded producer, Velma Von Tussle, and her popular but vicious daughter, Amber. But Tracy has lots of allies on her side, including her parents Edna and Wilbur, her best friend Penny Pingleton, her love interest Link, and show host Corny Collins, not to mention Seaweed, his little sister Inez, and his mother Motormouth Maybelle, the host of “Negro Day†on Corny’s show. With their help, Tracy manages to overcome bigotry and integrate the TV network. Tony Award-winning Hairspray continues to be one of the most widely produced musicals today, not only because of its irresistible songs and high-energy dances, but also because of the beautiful message of acceptance. Tracy Turnblad and her friends teach us all to look past the color of one’s skin and fight for every human being’s equal rights.
